General • a small and stocky-looking species which occurs mainly in North-Eastern Europe
Classification • suborder: Zygoptera (damselflies); family: Coenagrionidae
Scientific name Coenagrion lunulatum (Charpentier, 1840)

Notes • similar to C. hastulatum
Habitat • well-vegetated ponds and lakes, especially with acidic water
Dimensions • typical body length: 30-33 mm; hindwing: 16-22 mm
Both sexesHead➤ the underside of the eyes, thorax and abdomen is green
 Wings• the pterostigma is uniformly dark grey to black
MaleHead➤ the postocular spots are not connected by a line; by contrast, females as well as both sexes of the similar C. hastulatum do have such a connecting line
 Abdomen➤ the black mark on S2 resembles a half-moon crescent with two upright dashes (but this feature may vary)
FemaleThorax• the thorax is black and green/brown
  • the hind margin of the pronotum has two incisions, creating three separate lobes; see also the LineDrawing below
 Abdomen➤ the top of the abdomen is black but with sky-blue areas on S2 and especially S8
