Atlas of the European Dragonflies and Damselflies

The Spearhead Bluet is a smallish but fairly robust, black-and-blue species of Central and Northern Europe. Females are black and green. Our photographs of this species to date were made in Austria, Germany and Finland. Coenagrion hastulatum's most distinguishing features include the spearhead-shaped mark on the male's S2 (which gives the species its scientific and common names) and the line which connects the fairly narrow, pear-shaped postocular spots (a feature which distinguishes it from its congener C. lunulatum, whose male lacks such a connecting line).
